A Method to IE Address Madness
Neil J. Rubenking

Can you answer a question for me that no one else has been able to? What determines the listing order of URLs that appear in the Internet Explorer Address bar when you start to enter a Web address? The listing order doesn't make sense, but it never seems to change. Why is this?

via the Internet

The name of this feature is Use inline AutoComplete for Web addresses, and you can turn it on and off through the Advanced tab of the Internet Options dialog. When turned on, as it is by default, the feature provides a list of suggestions that match a partial address typed into IE's Address bar.

The suggestions come from your History folder, and their order looks screwy until you realize that certain prefixes are ignored for sorting purposes. In particular, http://www. is ignored, as are http:// and www. alone. After typing the letter s, you might see a list like this:

sales.company.com http://www.shipping.com

www.software.com http://support.microsoft.com

If you ignore the prefixes, these are actually in alphabetical order: sales, shipping, software, and support.

The missing Link
Have you ever found a web site with lots of links that you'd like to use as a point of reference but were afraid that if you started clicking the links you'd never find the original site again?
